about eco child
If you’re anything like me... you love reading the ‘about us’ section on a website... it gives the background story, goals and a little bit of flavour about a business and the people who run it... so..... no pressure here but time to summarise the single most important aspect of my life after my family!
I used to say that Eco Child was my third baby... but now I have a real third baby - so Eco Child is now best described as my company. A company that I have invested as much time, love, passion, hope, energy, midnight oil and effort as you would to raise a child.
Also, like a child; which is often acknowledged it ‘takes a village to raise a child’ Eco Child has taken a team to build. A dedicated, knowledgeable, hard working, caring and eco-conscious team to which I owe much gratitude and thanks.
I would also like to share with you a very unique aspect of the Eco Child team. When you email, call or drop in-store you’re not talking to an ordinary retail staff member.... our team vary in their qualifications from mother, earth mother, baby nurse, childcare professional to early childhood teachers! Most importantly, we all share the ability and the desire to help you with any queries you may have, so ask away!
Since 2006 we have been striving to bring to you the most comprehensive, top of the line selection of certified organic clothing, blankets, sheets, towels and organic skincare for mother and baby. In the last 18 months bamboo textiles have proven eco friendly as they’re grown without pesticides and a very popular addition to our range.
Eco Child was one of the very first Australian businesses to offer BPA-free baby bottles. Up until May 2008 we supported our ‘breast is best’ stance by not selling either baby bottles or infant formula at all. As the growing body of evidence strongly indicated that BPA in baby products was downright dangerous and not at all well known (back then) we decided to act. Eco Child launched our wholesale division with the introduction of Green to Grow and soon converted many other Australian retailers to the benefits of BPA free too!
Back to our store...
Nappies, nappies, nappies. I think that nappies are one of the first things new parents to-be think of when planning for bub’s arrival.... often with Dads planning to buy a peg for their nose, and Mum imagining drowning under a massive pile of washing. Not to mention the political bonfire the cloth vs. disposable nappy debate has become! Our view at Eco Child is that every family needs to find the right solution that will work for them. Eco-disposable, flat fold terry, all in one, pockets, flushable liners and soakers – just learning the new language is daunting. Don’t be daunted, we’re here to help and a great, flexible nappy solution can save you time, MONEY, and save the planet from more landfill. Our range of nappies gives you choice of eco-disposables, ever popular Bumgenius all in ones, beautifully soft and absorbent Baby Beehinds nappy and cover system as well as the uber-flexible Babygro which includes a flushable insert – fancy! Browse our organic product selection, check out the ‘nappy must haves’ new baby list or simply contact us for personal service.
Also, for babies we have a great selection of certified organic teething toys, snuggle bunnies, soft toys, organic cloth books and wooden teethers and toys. Our store is also jam packed with great wooden toys from companies such as Plan Toys with an eco manufacturing ethos - re-purposing rubber wood trees at the end of their cycle. Kids also go crazy for our Green Toys range made from recycled soda pop and milk bottles. You can always find a great gift for your kids with us at Eco Child, the importance of organic and eco doesn’t stop just because your bub learns to walk! It’s the beginning of a lifetime’s importance learning to choose products which don’t harm our planet – re-use, re-cycle, re-purpose, organic, eco, and environmentally friendly are phrases we all need to use more often!
I used to feel slightly embarrassed as my son always used to ask ‘is it organic?’ when he was offered food at friends’ houses. Now I only feel pride in the fact he has a better grasp than me on what can and can’t be re-cycled (thanks to the community Kindy excursion to the re-cycling centre several years ago) and loves to tell stall holders at the local farmers market that he only eats organic!
Over the years, our natural parenting products range has grown and grown. We have a fabulous range of organic slings, organic baby carriers, baby hammocks and wooden stands, water saving baby baths, fabulous HOTmilk nursing lingerie, breastfeeding garments, eco laundry products and heaps, heaps more. But, we’re not just an online store... or just a retail store for that matter. At Eco Child we’ve always had a fabulous baby clinic where you can meet privately, by appointment with our great paediatric nurse who’s also a lactation consultant and discuss any and all baby/ child / mother related concerns. We’re here to support and nurture, to help you along your journey to becoming a natural mother. We also regularly host information classes for infant massage, introducing baby to solid foods, Hypnobirthing and Australian Breastfeeding Association pre-natal breastfeeding sessions. If you’d like to be notified of these events make sure you’ve signed up for our e-newsletter!
An important question that I’m often asked is ‘what are the product selection criteria for an item to be sold by eco child?’
The answer is fairly simple and we apply it to all of our products. It MUST be the best option for your baby – we believe certified organic is, for a whole host of reasons. In short, certified organic cotton means it’s produced without the use of pesticides, genetically modified seeds and synthetic fertilisers. If you’d like to read more about organic cotton please visit our links page.
When assessing whether a product is the best option for your baby, we start from the skin and work out.... is this product going to touch a baby’s skin? I.e. clothing, blankets, wraps
Is this product going to be absorbed into or in contact with a baby’s skin? I.e. skincare, baby bottles, food storage or infant feeding utensils
Eco Child stocks the purest, most natural, chemical-free range of products all carefully selected to ensure your baby / child isn’t increasing their chemical load by using the wrong sort of products. The best part is when you shop with this attitude and select products using this criteria the planet benefits too!
On this note, thank you so much for visiting our website, shopping with us, supporting our business and making the right choices for your children and our planet... hope to see you back again soon as our range is always expanding!
